Searching for the Trickster in the 21st Century

Our short story contest “Searching for the Trickster in the 21st Century” resulted in over 30 submissions, with 24 qualifying for the official competition. One of the highlights for us was the revealing of the authorship of each work. The eight winners in the public competition and the two winners in the staff competition were honoured at a soiree in October at the Debaj Creation Centre – a classy affair that resulted in some serious enjoyment. The winners acknowledged include: Algis Tribinivicius, Raven Manitowabi, Sarah Hutchinson, Sophie Edwards, Jane Hubbard, Julian Nowgabow, Marion Seabrook, and Margo Little Corbiere as well as staff winners Trissten Rivers and Ron Berti. We would also like to extend a Gchi-miigwech to everybody who submitted to the contest – there were many other great stories that deserve recognition.

We have now started the very exciting process of transforming these short stories into short one-act plays to be performed at our Searching for the Trickster Festival this winter. All ten stage adaptations will be produced and performed over two days in February 2009.

A Nanabush Carol

Ok so we sent out an invitation to all those iconic revellers who still claim to have the festive spirit. Rudolph seemed to be forcing his joy, only one of the Three Kings showed up, and there was nothing jolly about Santa other than his belly full of jelly. Little Cindy-Lou-Who is all grown up and seems to have caught the eye of the not so Little Drummer Boy, and the Sugar Plum Fairy has taken a liking to polyester and costume jewelry.

But none of this has kept the general public from endlessly singing all about them. We have carols about Rudolph and carols about Shepherds and carols about chestnuts. But there are no carols about Nanabush. What’s with that?

Can Nanabush earn his way into the song books by reminding all the others just what this time of year is all about?

Debaj Performance of Dear Daphne more than theatre!

Performed for only one night, Dear Daphne is a tribute to one of the Grandmothers of the Woodlands School of Aboriginal Artists - Daphne Odjig. A group creation by the artists of Debajehmujig Theatre Group, the performance was so personal, so deeply moving, that is was experienced as being something more than theatre – it was ceremony.

With Daphne Odjig herself in the audience, this extraordinary evening allowed our performing artists an opportunity to show their deepest respect for Daphne who continues to be a beacon and an inspiration for all types of artists.

Dear Daphne was part of Debajehmujig Theatre Group’s involvement in the Opening Festivities of Witness - Daphne Odjig – A Retrospective Exhibition (National Gallery of Canada in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Sudbury, Bonnie Devine - Curator).

Debaj artists also engaged in animating the gallery space of the exhibit itself during the opening. This is a peculiar and engaging practice first employed during Debajehmujig’s residency at the Art Gallery of Ontario – Audge’s Place – All things are Connected.
